Reading, Listening and Speaking practice 18This practice is best to be taken after Lesson 25 to 30.

To go to previous practice, click here.

Please study the new words in the table before each scene. There will be four four scenes in four practice for this phase of study. You don’t need to study all four scenes at once. Take one at a time if you will.

You’re recommended to read the dialogue at least once on your own without the audio. Then turn on the audio and read again while listening. You can always pause or rewind the audio by clicking or sliding your mouse on the player’s progressing bar. Once you’ve understood all the content and recognized all the sentence patterns we used in the article, take your time to repeat with the recording until you can fluently read out loud through the whole dialogue on your own.

PS: To listen to the pronunciation of the new words in the new word table, please click on the pinyin for each character in the word. Please try to figure out the pronunciation through the pinyin first all by yourself. Don’t worry that you can’t get it right. You can progress much faster if you don’t rely on help and always try yourself first.

lǐ dàmā:" xiǎo Liú ā, nǐ yǒu shíjiān péi wǒ chuī chuīniú ma?"
李大妈:"小刘啊,你有时间陪我吹吹牛吗?"
Madam Li:”Xiao Liu, do you have time to chat with me?”

hùlǐ nǚgōng xiǎo Liú:" hǎo ā, lǐ dàmā, zhènghǎo shì wǔfàn shíjiān, ràng wǒmen biān chī biān liáo ba!"
护理女工小刘:"好啊,李大妈,正好是午饭时间,让我们边吃边聊吧!"
Nurse Liu:”Sure, Madam Li, it’s lunch time now, let’s eat and chat!”

lǐ dàmā:" hǎo de。 nǐ duì rén de tàidu zhēn hǎo! wǒ yǐqián yě jiàn guò tàidu hǎo de, dàn xiàng nǐ zhèyàng de, hái zhēn bù duō。"
李大妈:"好的。你对人的态度真好!我以前也见过态度好的,但象你这样的,还真不多。"
Madam Li:”Wonderful. You’re so kind to us! I’ve seen kind people before, but one like you is rare to find.”

hùlǐ nǚgōng xiǎo Liú:" dàmā, nǐ bù zhīdào, wǒ yuánlái píqi yīdiǎn dōu bùhǎo, yòu jí yòu zào de。 hòulái shàng le niánjì, jīnglì de shìqing duō le, réncái mànmàn pínghé le。"
护理女工小刘:"大妈,你不知道,我原来脾气一点都不好,又急又燥的。后来上了年纪,经历的事情多了,人才慢慢平和了。"
Nurse Liu:”Madam, you probably don’t know that I had a bad temper before. I was testy and harsh. Then, after I experienced enough life and with age, I became more and more peaceful.”

lǐ dàmā:" zhème shuō, wǒmen hái zhēn xiàng。 xiǎo Liú, wǒ céngjīng yě shì gè fēicháng yàoqiáng yòu jí zào de rén。 niánqīng shí hé wǒ lǎobàn tiāntiān chǎo, gōngzuò shàng yě fēicháng jiàozhēn, hé tóngshì men de guānxi yǒushí hěn jǐnzhāng。"
李大妈:"这么说,我们还真像。小刘,我曾经也是个非常要强又急燥的人。年青时和我老伴天天吵,工作上也非常较真,和同事们的关系有时很紧张。"
Madam Li:”It sounds exactly like my story, Xiao Liu. I had been ambitious and pressing before. I used to fight with my husband everyday. At work, I was also very serious. I didn’t get along well with my colleague.”

hùlǐ nǚgōng xiǎo Liú:" nà nín de píqi zěnme biàn hǎo de ne?"
护理女工小刘:"那您的脾气怎么变好的呢?"
Nurse Liu:”Then how did your temper change?

lǐ dàmā:" zìcóng wǒ lǎobàn bìngdǎo le, wǒ jiù zàibù gēn tā chǎo le。 jiànjiàn dì, wǒ fāxiàn wǒmen yǐqián dōu wéi yīxiē xiǎoshì chǎo, rúguǒ wǒ hé tā dōu hùxiāng ràng ràng, běnlái méishénme dàbùliǎo de。"
李大妈:"自从我老伴病倒了,我就再不跟他吵了。渐渐地,我发现我们以前都为一些小事吵,如果我和他都互相让让,本来没什么大不了的。"
Madam Li:”Since my husband had become sick, I stopped fighting with him. Gradually, I realized that if both of us had been a bit more forgiven, it shouldn’t have been that bad.”

hùlǐ nǚgōng xiǎo Liú:" bùshìma, dàmā。 rúguǒ wǒmen dōu néng zhǔdòng ràngbù, dàjiā dōu néng guòdé kuàilè xiē, nǐ shuō shì ma?"
护理女工小刘:"不是吗,大妈。如果我们都能主动让步,大家都能过得快乐些,你说是吗?"
Nurse Liu:”Isn’ it true, Madam. If we all give in a little we could have lived more happily.
