Learn to speak Chinese in "native accent" by dubbing Chinese movie or TV episodeAs I’ve suggested in previous post on Chinese TV episode , to imitate native speakers in the movie or TV episode and repeat the lines until you memorize them might be the best way to learn how to speak Chinese in a native way. Well, the assumption is that you totally understand the meaning of the lines you memorize.

You don’t need to know exactly how the characters in the lines were written,  but you need to understand each word in the sentences to start with. It would benefit your future study if you can memorize the look of all the characters. At least you should be able to write the pinyin out if you don’t remember the characters.

OK now, go ahead try to dub the following lines between the couple 建国 and 小西 and see how well you’re doing. For an introduction of the background of their conversation, check the previous post at Chinese TV episode. You need to listen to the recording a few times first while reading the script to understand the content of the conversation. Once it’s all clear to you. Go ahead to repeat with the audio. Once you feel OK to move on, play that Chinese TV episode in another window. Move slide to around 21 seconds at the beginning of the video, play for once so you know how to synchronize your dubbing with the acting. Slide back to the beginning and pause the video. Mute the sound and play the video again when you’re ready. Go dubbing!

jiànguó: duìbuqǐ … xiǎo xī …

Jian Guo: Sorry … Xiao Xi …

xiǎo xī: shénmeshì ā?

Xiao Xi: What’s the matter?

jiànguó: wǒ diē shuō, yào gěi wǒmen gài fángzi.

Jian Guo: My Dad said, he’ll build a house for us.

xiǎo xī: gài fángzi? gěi wǒmen? zài nǎr?

Xiao Xi: Build a house? For us? Where?

jiànguó: āi! hái néng zài nǎr ā?

Jian Guo: Where else could it be?

xiǎo xī: zài nǐmen cūn lǐ? … èn, tàihǎole! yǐhòu wǒmen yě liǎng chǔ yǒu fángzi. yě jìnrù le wǔ jiā èr yīzú. zhōuyī dào zhōuwǔ zài chénglǐ guò, zhōuliù zhōurì jiù dào nóngcūn lǐ qù guò.

Xiao Xi: In your village? … Hmn, wonderful! Then we’ll have houses in two place. We’ll join the “5 plus 2” club. Monday to Friday in the city. Saturday to Sunday in the country side.

jiànguó: zhè fángzi gài hǎole bùshì quán gěi wǒmen, zhǐ gěi wǒmen qízhōng de yī jiān. gēn wǒ fùmǔ gē sǎo yīqǐ zhù

Jian Guo: The house is not just for us, we only get one room. We’ll share with my parent and my brother’s family.

xiǎo xī: yī jiān yě xíng ā, yī jiān yě bǐ méiyǒu qiáng. jiānglái ā, wǒmen jiù dài háizi dào nóngcūn lǐ qù. xiàtiān, nǐ bù shuō nàr liángkuai ma? ràng háizi jiēchù jiēchù dàzìrán, jiēchù jiēchù nóngcūn. bùyào xiàng wǒ yīyàng, lián gè luóbo miáozi dōu bù zhīdào.

Xiao Xi: One room is fine too, it’s better than nothing. In the future, we could bring our child to the village. In the summer, didn’t you say it’s cooler in the village? Let our child to have a contact with the nature, with the rural area. Don’t be like me, even don’t know what radish sprouts are.

Let me know how your dubbing experience go in the comment area … enjoy your spring weekend!
