Learn Chinese from “doing” the most comfortable job in China – Hotel tester (试睡员)

Posted by Grace Feng on April 28, 2012

If you want to learn a language and be able to use it the way a native does, nothing is better than actually doing all kinds of jobs in the language environment and train yourself to communicate freely under all circumstances.

Today we’ll do something fun. I’ll play as your new boss from a travel agency in China. And you are the lucky new hire as a hotel tester. In Chinese, it’s called “酒店试睡员 jiǔ diàn shì shuì yuán“. It has been claimed to be the most comfortable job in China :-). Well in my opinion, if you like to travel and do not mind sleeping in a new place everyday, it is a fun job for sure. I’d prefer to go back home and sleep on my own bed most of the time. But that’s just me… so today, you are a new Chinese hotel tester on training!

Now it’s time to start, please prepare yourself with a pencil and paper. When you’re ready, have a quick look at the pictures below first. Then press the play button on the audio player. Listen carefully on the instructions for job responsibility, write down the letter of the picture of the job responsibility that was discussed in the audio after each break. When the audio finish, you’re done. The correct answer is in the bottom of this post.

This little test applies to Chinese learner beginner to intermediate level.

How well you did, my dear friends? Do you think you are able to pass the training? Please let me know. :-)

What a great test. I didn’t do very well-only 2 out of 7!. But I love when you use this type of exercise to test our listening skills – very practical.

I’ve come to this site only recently & am really enjoying the way I can practice a little of everything by studying grammar, stories, listening & speaking, and vocabulary lessons. Thank you for your hard work!
