Kevin Rudd’s mandarin joke: 天不怕,地不怕,只怕老外说中国话

Posted by Grace Feng on July 16, 2013

Kevin Rudd, Prime Minister of Australia, was giving a lecture in Beijing University in 2008. He had shown his talents in language and told the mandarin joke of “天不怕,地不怕,只怕老外说中国话” in front of Chinese audience –  very impressive!

However, the English subtitle of the video is purposely twisted into something else. Aside from that, it’s a good opportunity for you to figure out what exactly he said.

I’ll give you the clue about the Chinese expression he used near the end of the video, see if you can catch that too?

tiān bùpà, dì bùpà, zhǐpà lǎowài shuō Zhōngguóhuà

天不怕,地不怕,只怕老外说中国话

Not afraid of the sky, not afraid of the earth, the thing that is afraid of most is foreigner speaking Chinese.

Honestly, with more and more “foreigners” speaking fluent Chinese, I hope the above expression will not hold the truth anymore. :-)
