心锁 9

女老师过来看了一眼,安慰了小吉几句,打着哈欠责怪道,“你们这些女生,讲什么鬼故事嘛?搞得大家都睡不好。"

她出去后,走廊上的门又一扇扇关上。

女孩儿们各自回到自己的床上,灯熄了,房间又重回黑暗。

小吉躺在床上,看着天花板,脸上还挂着未干的泪痕。

她睡不着。刚才的梦太可怕了,梦镜中的男人,不是别人,正是她的爸爸!

Lock of the Heart 9

The teacher had a look at Xiaoji and comforted her a little. Then she yawned and complained, “Do you girls have to tell ghost stories? Now no one gets a decent sleep.”

After she stepped out, the doors along the hallway closed shut one after another.

Girls went back to their own beds. Lights were out and darkness returned.

Xiaoji laid in bed with eyes staring at the ceiling. Her face was still wet with tears.

She couldn’t fall in sleep. The dream she had was just too horrible. The man in the dream was no one but her own Dad!

    … ,打着哈欠责怪道,…

“道” here certainly adds a new meaning to the text but I’m not able to figure it out.
Please, Grace, can you help me ?

“道” has a couple meanings. In the sentence above, it means “说“。 As a matter of fact, in old Chinese, “道” was used more frequently than “说“ in the meaning of “say”.

In modern Chinese however, “说“ turns into a high frequency word. “道” in the meaning of “say” is only kept in limited usage.

It usually follows another verb to form the expression of “and say”.

For example, ”He complained and said, ‘Why didn’t you tell me?'” can be expressed this way:

      他抱怨道:“你为什么不告诉我?”

Another example, “She sighed and said, ‘Let it be then.'”

      她叹气道,“那就这样吧。”

Remember, this usage is only used in written Chinese, not oral.

      Does this help?
