Chinese City Girl’s Story – Li Man’s Resolution 李曼的决心 1 [Elementary Level]

Posted by Grace Feng on November 28, 2015

I’ve taken a long break from writing new stuff for my readers and now I’m back. Guess we all need some time off to refresh ourselves every now and then? Now I feel good to write “stuff” again. Are you ready to read new “stuff” too?

This new story is about the pursuit of “better life” by a city girl Li Man. There’s nothing wrong with one’s desire to achieve a better life. However, sometimes we lose our vision for the most important thing in life while chasing our dreams.  Li Man was one of the many common city girls that had the ambition to break into the Upper Class. She made resolutions and acted on them with a persistent heart.

However, the closer she was to her goal, the more unhappy she became. She was confused and a little depressed until she met him, a boy that understand her feelings inside and out. The unhappiness that Li Man experienced was so real to him since he had been there. Will he help Li Man to get out of her depression? I’ll leave it to you to figure out.

The whole story is about ten mini chapters long. I’ll rate it as Chinese elementary level. As always, your suggestions or feedbacks are very welcomed. Constructive comment will not only inspire me, but also other learners on this site to think from different perspective. Laugage learning can become much more enjoyable if we fill it with life. Thank you.

the story is interesting and short, which is perfect for me. I couldn’t recognize some of the characters, but understood the gist of the sentences thanks to your lessons. Please keep up your good work. Your blog has been so helpful to me for the past few months. Li Man’s story made me think abut my own New Year Resolution.

Hi Hana, thanks for your quick feedback! Glad to hear that the lessons helped you with your reading despite of words that you didn’t know. Hope the pop up annotation helped you with the new words too. :-)

I’m wishing that you’re happy with what you’ve done for your last resolution and good luck with your new resolution.

      :-)

Yes, the pop-up annotation helped me a lot. I wanted to recognize them without the use of pinyin or dictionary. I never sticks up to anything I promise myself to do, so resolutions are kinda wasted on me. But surprisingly, I’m enthusiastic about learning languages since my desire to learn Chinese is so that I can read all those free e-novels online. Enough about me, I hope you can also achieve your goals.

Just back from “reddit”. Don’t you see you there anymore although your website deserves more promotion, sure !

By the way, i need your help. Please, could you translate these sentences ? You would help me understand something that is not clear to me. Thanks a lot. The way I would say the last sentence sounds so ugly, only you can find the natural way of saying it.
    请问你帮我翻译一下吗?

Two years ago, I came in this town.
I’ve stayed in this town for 3 days.

Hi Batman, thanks for letting me know the reddit site link, I didn’t read it before. I wish I could have more time to promote the site as well as update the site.

As for you question, please see translation below:

Two years ago, I came in this town.
      两年前, 我来到了这个小镇。
I’ve stayed in this town for 3 days.
      我已经在这个镇上待了三天。
Two years ago, I stayed 3 days in this town.
      两年前,我在这个镇上待过三天。

      Sounds good to you?

I will copy and paste this somewhere…Don’t know, I had some wall I had to run up against and I couldn’t do it…
In the last sentence, I wanted to place “两年前” just after the subject “我”, is it possible ?

    两年前,我在这个镇上待过三天。
    or
    我两年前在这个镇上待过三天。

Both are correct, all right. Simple sentences but it was confusing for me though.
    Thanks again.

      Hi Eva,

I don’t see any issue when I try to download myself. All you need to do is to hover mouse over “liman01.mp3” and right click to “Save link as”. If you can explain your issue a bit more, I might help you better.

      Thanks,

      Grace

Hi Eva, the issue has just been fixed.

It’s caused by an html typo in the download link. Not sure why I didn’t see the problem the first time. :-(

The same typo existed in 1 and 2 only. The rest mini chapters are good.

Let me know if it works for you now.

Sorry for the delay in getting this resolved.

      Cheers,

      Grace

Hi Grace. Your work on this website is wonderful. I’ve read Heping Eatery and The Eyes Behind so far. Both quite sad stories. Regards

After reading the story and getting familiar with the new words, I understood the story. I live in China and exposed to the Chinese language 中文alott.. The biggest problem I have had is the listening and understanding翻译. I find that some of the language is short cut, many different dialects…. some I just don’t understand, even my wife who is Chinese cannot understand what they are saying. I am now working on HSK 4 learning about 6 or seven words a day, I make sure that I can write, read and understand and work into sentences… your site is very helpful as I can pick up the grammar patterns and also read stories at the right level .
It great that I found your site
    Cheers Graeme

Hi Graeme, so glad to hear that. :-) Living in the language environment does give you the advantage for daily practice. And I also understand the challenge of dialects and accent in China. Even me, as a native Chinese, would have to struggle with my listening comprehension if I’m not familiar with the accent. Not to say dialects … most of them are alien language to me.:-)

You’re very welcome to share your learning experience here whenever you’re up to.

      Thanks,

      Grace

    Hi Grace,

Thank you for you wonderful website. Would it be possible to record the shorter stories as a complete recording from start to finish? Stories such as: 他的故事, 分手, 爱的往事, 婉君, 李曼的决心,等 — as they are all less than 10 minutes long and it is really helpful to be able to listen to the entire story uninterrupted. Thank you for you consideration. BEst regards.
