Beginner to Elementary Level Chinese Story 河平面馆 (He Ping Eatery) 1

Posted by Grace Feng on September 4, 2016

Hello my friends!

Summer is about to end. Did you have a good time hanging out with your loved ones, family and friends in a beautiful place? I hope you did. And I also hope that you still remember your Chinese vocabulary when you’re back, or at least, some of it. :-)

As I promised, here is another story in Beginner to Elementary level Chinese. If you want to compare it to HSK levels. I’d say that it falls between HSK 3 and HSK 4. You’ll definitely see some words that are out of HSK3/4 word table. But again, you’re here to improve and expand your vocabulary, aren’t you? Never limit yourself to your text books only. The world outside of your text books is actually the place your dream became true, isn’t it?

You might have seen a fighting couple before. Unfortunately, it’s not easy to not see one today. This story begins with a couple who fight each other fairly often. You’ll read along and see how their relationship develops. You’ll also find out what happens in the end if you are able to read to the end.

When you finish, please kindly share your thoughts in the comment area, thank you!

(The story has thirteen mini chapters. Audio will be posted in a later date … not too late I promise.)

Thanks for sharing this. It seems, however, that the traditional text is wrong and was perhaps just run through Google Translate. In the text above, two characters are used for mian4, neither of which I have seen used in Taiwan, which always uses 麵. I suspect therefore that this site will cause a lot of headaches for those learning traditional Chinese.

Otherwise, it looks like it was meticulously prepared.

      Hi John,

Thank you for pointing out the error for me. As a matter of fact, I did have doubt on the conversion of that character at the very beginning. I used a web site to convert simplified to traditional, not google translate. Fairly speaking, it did the job most of time. However, there had been occasions that errors were found.

I do apologize for the mistake I made. After running through all 13 posts, I’ve got the mistake corrected. Hope you still see value of the story in learning in traditional Chinese.

Again, thank you for your support.

Hello, and first you had been so kind in your first reply to me over 2 years ago.

I was wondering, are you familiar with the book titled: Sons Are Worse Than Stones?

When I was studying Chinese at the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa, My professor gave me a copy of that book and have enjoyed it, but sadly when in China the book fell apart as it is paper bound.

I was wondering as the book has 22 short stories such as:
Hu Jia Hu Wei and Ke Zhou Qiu Jian, and Qian Dai, or A Fan Ti and the sound of his money bag.

Would it be possible to get permission to have these stories put on on this site or it this site restricted to just those stories written anew.

    Just curious
    Ma De En

      Hi Ma De En,
Sorry for the late reply. I don’t have the book … but the stories you mentioned in the book are all classic Chinese stories for children. I believe it’s not hard to find videos, learning materials online about them. All you need to do is typing the Chinese title to youtube or alike to search them out, such as Hu Jia Hu Wei (狐假虎威):

If you have difficulty finding any story, or knowing their Chinese titles, please let me know. I’ll see what I can help.

Hi Grace thanks for these. Is it possible to download the entire story rather than small parts? Or is there an auto play function?
