A Chinese article that can make a stone cry –

Posted by Grace Feng on February 9, 2012

This article was first posted on a Chinese forum 网易(wǎng yì) by writer “春儿(chūn r)” some years ago. It was so touching and well written that people started to share it across the web.

The original article is about 10824 character long. I’ll post them in a series of posts with pinyin annotation and my own English translation. An online radio recording by 晓风(xiǎo fēng) from www.1ting.com is also placed at the beginning of each post. Please be aware that the recording has slight changes in wording here and there compared to the original article. The recording has been split into smaller parts to align with the length of each post.

Feel free to drop your comments along your reading. If you have questions, I’ll try my best to respond within 24 hours.

My Love Lost Forever

chūn r

春儿

wǒ de chòu chòu yǒuzhe róuruǎn de shēntǐ hé měilì de yǎnjing, báinèn de pífū, tā de tóu hòu yǒu yīpiàn hóng hóng

de tāijì, xiàng tā de fùqīn。

My Chou Chou has soft body, beautiful eyes, fair and clear skin. On the back of his head there’s a blot of red birthmark, just like his Dad.

yòushǒu wàn shàng yǒu yī kē xiǎoxiǎo de hēi zhì, xiàng wǒ。

There’s a little black mole on his right hand, just like me.

yīnwèi wǒ xǐhuan huà gōng bǐ rénwù, suǒyǐ gěi tā liú le yī gè gǔdài de tóngzǐ tóu, qiánmiàn yī gè táo xíng,

hòumian yī tiáo cháng cháng xì xì de xiǎo biànzi, qíyú tóufa quánbù tì guāng。

Since I like draw claborate-style portrait, I did a ancient boy haircut for him. His front hair was cut into a peach shape, the bottom hair on the back was braided into a long thin pigtail, the rest of his hair was all shaved off.

chòu chòu nà tiáo xiǎo biànzi zì chūshēng yǐlái méiyǒu jiǎn guò, wǒ yòng hóng sīdài xì zhù.

His little pigtail has never been cut since he was born, I tied it with red string.

yīn tā de tóu xíng dútè, lǐfàdiàn jiǎn bù chūlái。

Due to the uniqueness of his hair style, the barber’s was not able to do the haircut.

suǒyǐ, měicì dōu shì wǒ zài tā shuìjiào de shíhou yòng xiǎo jiǎndāo nàixīn de yīdiǎndiǎn de xiūjiǎn

So every time I just used a small scissors to patiently cut his hair little by little while he was fast asleep.

wǒ de chòu chòu shì dútè de。 zhìshǎo zài wǒ zhège māma yǎn lǐ。

My Chou Chou was unique, at least in his Mom’s eyes.

mànmàn de, tā kāishǐ xué zǒulù。

Slowly, he began to walk.

kāishǐ tā zài xué bù chē lǐ xuéxí。 tā xué de hěn kuài, chángcháng kàn dào tā de shēnyǐng zài jiālǐ chōng lái zhuàng qù。

At first he learn in his baby walker. He progressed very fast. I used to see his little body dashing through here and there inside the house.

tā hěn hàoqí, tā kànjiàn jìngzi lǐ de zìjǐ huì wēixiào, ránhòu qīn yīxià, kànjiàn jiāshīqì mào chū de bái

yān yě huì shēnshǒu qù zhuā。

He was very curious, he would smile when he saw himself in the mirror, he’d give his image a kiss. He liked to grab the while stream that came out from the humidifier.

zài wǒ gěi tā zuòfàn de shíhou, tā huì bǎ chē tíng zài chúfáng ménkǒu, hàoqí de zhāngwàng。

When I was cooking for him, he used to park his baby walker at the entrance of the kitchen, peek inside from there curiously.

tā hěn yīlài wǒ, bùlùn wǒ zài nǎlǐ, tā dōu gēnzhe。

He was so much attached to me that wherever I went, he followed.

nǎpà shì wǒ zài xǐzǎo hé qù wèishēngjiān, tā dūhuì chóngchóng de qiāodǎ zhe mén, zài quèrèn wǒ zài lǐmiàn de qíng

kuàng xià, ānjìng de děngdài wǒ chūqù。

Even when I was in shower or went to washroom, he could knock on the door heavily. Once he had confirmed I was inside the door, he’d calm down and wait for me to come out.
