A Chinese article that can make a stone cry – 永失我爱 (19)This article was first posted on a Chinese forum 网易(wǎng yì) by writer “春儿(chūn r)” some years ago. It was so touching and well written that people started to share it across the web.

The original article is about 10824 character long. I’ll post them in a series of posts with pinyin annotation and my own English translation. An online radio recording by 晓风(xiǎo fēng) from www.1ting.com is also placed at the beginning of each post. Please be aware that the recording has slight changes in wording here and there compared to the original article. The recording has been split into smaller parts to align with the length of each post.

Feel free to drop your comments along your reading. If you have questions, I’ll try my best to respond within 24 hours.

My Love Lost Forever

chūn r

春儿

dàn wǒ réng gǎnxiè shàngcāng, tā zǒu de shíhou méiyǒu xiàng yīshēng yùyán de nàyàng。 tā de miànmào méi zěnme biàn。

But I was still grateful that his look was not deformed that much as anticipated by the doctor.

suīrán tā de liǎn yǒuxiē qīngwēi de biànxíng, dàn tā línzǒu de shíhou réng kàn de jiàn wǒ。 tā de yòu yǎn méiyǒu shīmíng。

Although his face was distorted a little bit, he could still see before he left. He didn’t lose his vision on his right eye.

tā réng néng zhǔnquè de yòng tā de xiǎo shǒu jǐnjǐn de zhuāzhù wǒ de shǒu。

He was still able to accuratedly and tightly grab my hand with his little hand.

tā réng zhīdào tā de māma zài tā de shēnbiān。 yǒngyuǎn!

He still knew that his Mommy was just beside him, forever!

wǒ xuǎnzé le gěi tā huǒzàng. lǎorén gàosu wǒ, zhèyàng xiǎo jiù yāozhé de háizi zuìhǎo mái zài lùbiān。

I chose to cremate him. Older people told me, a child that died so small should better be buried on roadside.

wǒ jiānjué de bùtóng yì, chòu chòu zàishì de shíhou yǐ bǎo shòu zhémó, wǒ bùnéng róngrěn tā xiǎoxiǎo de shēntǐ zài bīnglěng de nítǔ zhōng gūdān de shuì qù。

I refused firmly. Chou Chou already suffered so much when he was alive, I couldn’t stand to let his little body sleep in the cold soil alone.

bùnéng xiǎngxiàng tā de shēntǐ shòu chóng yǐ de qīnhài。 wǒ pà tā lěng, pà tā jìmò。 pà tā xǐnglái kūhǎn zhe zhǎo māma。

I couldn’t imagine to let worms and ants to hurt him further. I was aftaid he’d feel cold and lonely. I was afraid he’d cry for Mommy when he woke up.

wǒ yào tā huà chéng qīng yān, suífēng sǎn qù。

wǒ bùyào tā zài zǒu hòu nàxiē huàidōngxi hái jìxù qīnshí tā de shēntǐ。

I wouldn’t let those bad things to erode his body after he died.

wǒ yào tā huà chéng qīng yān, suífēng sǎn qù。

I wanted him to become light smoke, gone with the wind.

wǒ yào tā gàn gānjìng jìng de lái, gàn gānjìng jìng de zǒu。

I wanted him to come clean and leave clean.

huǒzàng de shíhou wǒ méiyǒu qù, wǒ méi gǎn qù。

I didn’t go to the cremation, I could not go.

wǒ wúfǎ miànduì wǒ sǐqù de háizi。 wǒ pà zìjǐ kòngzhì bùliǎo zìjǐ。

I couldn’t face my dead child. I was afraid I couldn’t control myself.

wǒ de àiren hé wǒ de tóngshì qù sòng de chòu chòu。 huílai hòu, wǒ wàng zhe wǒ de àiren mòmò de liúlèi。

My lover and my colleagues went to see Chou Chou leave. When they came back, I looked at my lover, sobbing silently.

wǒ de àiren ā, wǒ jiānqiáng de zhàngfu。 zài háizi yǒu bìng de shíhou tā méiyǒu kū guò。

My lover, my strong husband, when our child was sick, he never cried.

dàn cǐkè, tā zài chuáng shàng dǎ zhe gǔn, yònglì zhuā zhe zìjǐ de xiōngtáng, sīchě zhe yīfu。 fàngshēng dàkū。

But now, he’s rolling from side to side on bed, scratching his chest, tearing his clothes, crying out loud.

tā zhǐshì bùtíng de gàosu wǒ:“ chūn r, wǒ téng ā! wǒ xīnténg ā!”

He kept telling me:”Chunr, I’m aching! My heart is aching!”

wǒ bào zhù tā de tóu, tā xūruò de xiàng yī gè yīng’ér。

I held his head, he was weak like a baby.

qù。”

去。”

He murmured to me:” I saw how he got cremated. At that moment, I just wanted to jump into the incinerator.”

wǒ bào zhe wǒ de àiren, lèishuǐ bùtíng de liú。

I held my lover, letting my tears to fall.

wǒ zhǐnéng gàosu tā:“ nǐ zhēn shǎ, nǐ zěnme néng qù kàn ne?”

I could only tell him:” Silly you , how could you watch that?”
